The 2019 general elections to the Lok Sabha (lower house of the parliament), held in seven phases between April and May 2019, saw BJP leading a historic landslide victory, making Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister for the second term.
Interesting facts of 2019 general elections:
- This is the first time since independence, BJP on its own won 302 seats of the 543 seats in Lok Sabha
- First time since independence other than Congress, BJP’s Narendra Modi was elected for the second term with a whopping majority
- 2019 general elections was the longest election held till date in the country in terms of the number of days the polling is held for. It was conducted in 7 phases across India for 39 days.
- First time the Gandhi family lost in their home constituency – Amethi (Uttar Pradesh)
- BJP dint win even a single seat from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
- He was elected as the 14th PM of India in 2014 and will continue to serve next 5 years
- First time BJP made inroads in West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar on its own
- It is the second time Congress just managed to win seats in two digit. In 2014 they got 44 seats and in 2019 they got 92 seats.
- About 900 million Indian citizens were eligible to vote in one of the seven phases depending on the region.
- The 2019 elections attracted a turnout of over 67 % – the highest ever in the history of Indian general elections, as well the highest recorded participation in Indian elections by women.
Electoral System:
- India is divided into 543 constituencies. From each constituency one member is elected to the Parliament( Lok Sabha) ( In this 2019 elections, in 302 constituencies BJP won)
- The members are elected from each constituency through first past the post voting system.
- The President of India nominates an additional two members from the Anglo-Indian community if he believes the community is under-represented
- Eligible voters must be Indian citizens, 18 or older, an ordinary resident of the polling area of the constituency and possess a valid voter identification card issued by the Election Commission of India. Some people convicted of electoral or other offences are barred from voting.
- The elections are held once every five years.
- The details of the elections will be announced by Election Commission of India (ECI).
