Assembly elections in Mizoram, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh fate to be decided on December 11

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s term ends the General Elections is scheduled to be held in May 2019. Currently, the local Assembly Elections that are held in five states – Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.  These elections are considered significant as it may resonate popular voice to the coming up General Elections in 2019.

General elections and Assembly elections:

India has adopted a federal system. In a federal system the totality of the governmental powers is divided by the constitution between central government and the state government or other territorial subdivisions. It is a system of central and local government combined under a common sovereignty.

India having 29 federated states, each state elect their Chief Minister to governor their respective state. Prime Minister and Chief Ministers serve 5 year term. As the term ends elections are conducted respectively.

Below are few facts about each state.

Chhattisgarh

Located in the centre-east of the country, was formed on November 1 2000. The capital city is Raipur

Present Chief Minister: Raman Singh from Bharatiya Janata Party is ruling for last 15 years

Polls held on: November 12 and 20

Contesting parties: BJP, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) , Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) and  Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)

Total seats: 90 assembly seats

Total electorate: An electorate of over 1.5 crore, including over 77 lakh male and over 76 lakh female voters, is eligible to exercise their franchise.

Mizoram

Christian dominated state with a population of 10 lakhs. Mizoram is the only state currently ruled by the Congress in the Northeast.

Present Chief Minister: Lal Thanhawla, Congress

Polls to be held on: November 28

Contesting parties: Congress, BJP, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF)

Total seats: 40 assembly seats

Total electorate: An electorate of over 7.5 lakh to exercise their franchise.

Telangana

Telangana is a state in southern India, formed on June 2 2014.

Present Chief Minister:  Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, Telangana Rashtra Samiti party

Polls to be held on: December 7 polls.

Contesting parties: Telangana Rashtra Samiti, TDP, Congress, BJP

Total seats: 119 Assembly seats

Total electorate: An electorate of over 2.61 crore to exercise their franchise.

Madhya Pradesh

Present Chief Minister: Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP, CM since 2005

Polls held on: November 28

Contesting parties: Congress, BJP, Samajwadi Party,  Bahujan Samaj Party

Total seats: 230 seats

Total electorate: An electorate of over 5.04 crore to exercise their franchise

Rajasthan

Present Chief Minister: Vasundhara Raje, BJP since 2013

Polls held on: Dec 07

Contesting parties: BJP, Congress

Total seats: 200 seats

Total electorate: An electorate of over4.75 crore to exercise their franchise
