03 Oct 2018: Ranjan Gogoi, 63 year old, today was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He succeeds Deepak Mishra.
Ranjan Gogoi’s father Keshab Chandra Gogoi was the Chief Minister of Assam in 1982. Ranjan Gogoi is the first person from North East India to become CJI.
He joined the Bar in 1978 and practised at the Gauhati High Court. Later he was made a Permanent Judge on 28 February 2001.
In September 2010 he got transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court and became its Chief Justice on 12 February 2011. He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 23 April 2012.
Chief Justice of India: Chief Justice of India heads the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court consists of Chief Justice of India and not more than 31 other judges. Currently there are 23 Judges apart from CJI.
Appointment: The senior most Judge of the Supreme Court is appointed to the office of CJI.
Retirement age: The CJI/Judge retires at the age of 65 years
