Birthday celebrations with modakas

Divya Rabindra@NFC, divya.r@news4children.com

Ganesha Chathurthi is just around the corner, so it’s time to bring out the moulds or your modaka making skills. Well, I am not very good at making modakas but here’s a recipe I gave a try and folks at home loved it.

I tried making it healthy using whole wheat flour and shallow frying and using less of jaggery. But hey, you don’t have to do that. This is a celebration of a deity who is fond of sweets, so that’s a license for the kids to go all out with sweets.

Fun activities

Along with this recipe and other customs that follows in your respective homes, you could also involve your kids with some fun activities and read some interesting books. You could download the below attached pictures of Ganesha for “lentil art” and “colouring”. Please see the finished art samples for just an idea but your kids can be as creative as they like.

Recommended books are “Ganesha’s sweet tooth”, “The Elephant Prince”,  “Amma, tell me about Ganesha”.

Ingredients

For the filling

  1. Coconut( shredded or powdered) (Fresh or dry) your choice  – 1 cup
  2. Jaggery – 1/2 cup
  3. Cashew – 3 or 4 finely chopped
  4. Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp

For the outer covering

  1. Whole wheat flour – 3/4 cup
  2. Semolina – 1/4 cup
  3. Warm ghee – 2 tbsp
  4. Salt – a pinch
  5. Milk – 3-4 tbsp ( add slowly as you knead)
Directions
1. On medium heat, mix coconut, jaggery and stir continuously till jaggery melts and the mixture is well combined.
This should take around 5 minutes.
Then add chopped cashews.
Keep aside to cool.
2. Take all the ingredients for the outer covering except milk in a bowl. Give it a quick mix. Then add the milk slowly as required and knead the dough till you get a smooth dough. You may not need all the milk. So go slow.
3. Cover the dough with a damp kitchen towel/ cloth and let sit for 10 mins.
4. Now divide the dough into small balls as you would to make puris. Roll out the dough one at a time, keeping the rest covered with damp towel and add the filling. Make pleats on the edges and bring them together on top to make a modaka. Pinch off excess dough.
5. You could shallow/deep fry them till golden brown.
Happy Ganesha Chathurthi and happy cooking!!
